Book Review: The Keeper of Lonely Spirits by A.S. King

From the moment I heard about The Keeper of Lonely Spirits, I was drawn to the idea of an aged immortal ghost hunter grappling with both the weight of his past and the allure of friendship in a small town. A.S. King has a talent for intertwining the fantastical with the deeply human, making this novel a fascinating read from the outset. As someone who loves stories that explore complex emotions through supernatural elements, I couldn’t resist diving in.

Peter Shaughnessy, our protagonist, is a unique character that stands apart from the legions of immortal heroes we often encounter. His two centuries of life have left him weary but still fiercely curious about the world—particularly those lingering spirits in Harrington, Ohio. King’s portrayal of Peter, with his conflicted emotions and grumpy exterior masking a tender heart, adds depth to the narrative. It isn’t every day that we see an immortal character who has stopped aging at seventy, giving Peter a perspective that is as refreshing as it is poignant. I couldn’t help but picture Sam Elliott bringing Peter to life if this ever made it to the big screen!

One of the standout aspects of this story is its rich tapestry of diverse characters. From Nevaeh, the first Black female cemetery director, to the vibrant children, Sayid and Samira, each character brings their own unique struggles and hopes, enriching the novel’s exploration of grief and found family. The way King crafts their connections is heartwarming and contributes to an atmosphere where vulnerability is embraced. Every character has their burdens, and it felt deeply relatable to see their individual journeys intersect with Peter’s.

However, while the plot shines in many areas, it does come with a few bumps. Officially tagged as “cozy horror-fantasy,” I found some of the horror elements surprisingly intense, conflicting with my initial expectations. King’s writing sometimes treads into repetitive territory, with certain phrases popping up more often than necessary, which made sections feel a tad slower than they could have been. I found myself wishing for a tighter edit to alleviate some of these issues.

Romantically, Peter’s relationship with another character treads a line between charming and cringeworthy, with a hint of “insta-love” that felt out of place for his stoic nature. Still, King’s ability to create emotional highs and lows kept me turning pages, even when I wasn’t fully convinced by every plot device.

What resonated with me was the ambiance King created with her deft descriptions, especially in conveying the emotions of both the living and the spirits. The title itself, The Keeper of Lonely Spirits, beautifully captures the dual nature of the narrative—how the living navigate their own solitude while attempting to understand and heal the echoes from beyond.

In wrapping up my thoughts, I can confidently say this book offers an engaging experience for those who enjoy stories that weave together fantasy and a touch of darkness. If you’re willing to embrace its imperfections, The Keeper of Lonely Spirits will certainly leave you reflecting on the profound connections we form—both in life and beyond. While I personally found it a heart-read rather than a head-read, it captivated me enough to keep me engaged throughout.

I recommend this novel to fans of paranormal and fantasy who appreciate explorations of grief. Just prepare for an experience that leans more into the realm of complexity than cozy vibes!
