Book Review: The Brightest Night (Origin, #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Ah, The Brightest Night! It pulled me in like the cosmic gravity of one of those hot aliens I can’t seem to resist. Jennifer L. Armentrout’s third installment of the Origin series had me mixed in a whirlwind of emotions as I navigated through its pages, grappling with my love-hate relationship with its characters and, yes, its romantic entanglements, too. So sit back, grab a snack (maybe not a Thanksgiving turkey), and let’s unpack this chaotic ride together.

From the get-go, it’s clear that the stakes are higher than ever as the story picks up seamlessly from the previous installment. The characters I’ve come to adore feel like family at this point, although I found myself barely suppressing the urge to yell at them more than once. Our protagonist, Evie, often frustrated me with her overwhelming insecurity and tendency to make every situation about her. Seriously, someone give this girl some self-confidence! However, her moments of “evil” were the saving grace that reminded me there was potential for strength beneath that indecisiveness. Luc, the charmingly sardonic love interest, was equally perplexing—his devotion was endearing, but their morbid need to be joined at the hip was plain exhausting.

Now, let’s talk about the romance—or rather, the melodramatic entanglement that left me nauseated at times (shout out to last week’s lunch). To say I was grimacing through the romantic scenes would be generous. There was a distinct lack of breathing room, and their co-dependence made me want to scream. As one review mentioned, “Going to the bathroom? Let me help you wipe.” It was comedic, yes, but also made me long for some character growth that was sorely missing.

But despite my eye-rolling reactions, I must admit that Armentrout has a way of crafting a captivating narrative. The pacing was brisk, leaving me breathless amidst thrilling twists and betrayals that I didn’t see coming, even if I suspected them in the back of my mind. The writing style was refreshingly clear, with vivid metaphors that painted the alien scenery perfectly, allowing me to escape reality—a much-needed reprieve. Particularly, the penultimate chapter had such a jaw-dropping twist that I nearly dropped my Kindle.

One line that struck me profoundly was: “Never come for me… If you do, I will take everything from you.” Those words hung heavy in the air, a stark reminder of the true gravity of their intertwined fates. It perfectly captured the blend of tension and emotion that Armentrout excels at.

Ultimately, The Brightest Night is a delightful mix of action, romance, and character development (even if it’s a bit frustrating at times). I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys young adult fantasy with a heavy dose of angst and extraterrestrial flair, but maybe keep some snacks nearby just in case!

In conclusion, while my reading experience was turbulent thanks to Evie and her outbursts of emotional chaos, I can’t deny that it was a blast to dive back into the Lux universe. And despite my conflicted feelings, I walked away excited for what the next installment might bring (let’s hope for character growth and fewer cringe-worthy moments). If you’re ready for a ride filled with laughter, frustration, and some truly hot aliens, then grab The Brightest Night and get ready for a wild journey!
