Discovering Darkness in Paradise: A Review of Nothing Bad Happens Here

There’s something unnervingly enticing about a book that juxtaposes idyllic settings with hidden darkness—Nothing Bad Happens Here by Rachel Ekstrom Courage does just that. When I stumbled upon its synopsis, I was immediately captivated by the seemingly perfect summer backdrop of Nantucket, a place where “nothing bad ever happens.” But when I learned that the story involves a gritty mystery lurking beneath the surface, I was all in. Little did I know, it would be a mixed bag of intrigue and irritation.

At the heart of this narrative is sixteen-year-old Lucia, who finds herself reluctantly spending her summer in this picturesque town, only to be jolted back to reality when she discovers the body of a teenage girl washed up on the beach. From there, the book unfolds a dual narrative of a mystery and character growth, although it leans heavily into the latter until the final act. The slow build allowed for rich world-building, immersing me in Nantucket’s small-town dynamic. I appreciated how Courage portrayed the distinct contrasts between Lucia’s character and the seemingly carefree local teens, particularly Selah and her friends. Their social world is vibrant and tempting, pulling Lucia into experiences that felt richly textured, even if they strayed from traditional thriller territory.

That said, I found myself increasingly frustrated with Lucia. While I understood her trauma and the emotional weight she carried, her decisions often felt inconsistent and frustratingly naive. At times, her flip-floppiness overshadowed the compelling mystery. She seemed to leap into friendships without much thought, which raised an eyebrow or two on my end—who hangs out with girls they barely know? It’s a question that lingered more than it should have.

What stunned me, however, was the abrupt introduction of supernatural elements around the halfway mark. It felt as if the book paused to toss in a curveball without enough explanation to make it truly satisfying. This jarring shift took me by surprise, leading to a head-scratching moment that collided with my expectations of the story.

As I neared the end, I’ll admit, there were some thrilling plot twists—though they weren’t as shocking as I hoped. The pacing quickens significantly in the last quarter, leading to a breathless finale that makes you wish for an epilogue, a look into the aftermath, perhaps a news report to tie up those loose ends.

In the end, Nothing Bad Happens Here shines in its exploration of character and setting, but it didn’t quite reach the heights of my favorite murder mysteries. Readers looking for a deep psychological dive into characters with a sprinkle of mystery will likely appreciate this. It might not be a page-turner in the traditional sense, but it offers a reflective take on trauma and friendship set against a haunting backdrop.

If you enjoy stories that explore the contrasts between the image of paradise and the underlying secrets held within, then this book might resonate with you. While I had my gripes with Lucia, the journey through Nantucket’s beautiful yet deceptive landscape left an imprint on me, proving that sometimes, the most idyllic settings can harbor the darkest secrets.
