A Journey Through Never Ever After: A Dazzling Fantasy Awaiting Discovery

When I first stumbled upon Never Ever After by Sue Lynn Tan, I was curious yet cautious. The promise of a unique fantasy narrative intertwined with a Cinderella re-telling was enough to catch my interest. However, as someone who often gravitates towards stories heavy on romance, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Little did I know, this book would take me on an unexpected adventure that left me both captivated and pleasantly surprised.

From the outset, Never Ever After excels in world-building, introducing readers to the enchanting landscapes of Mist Island, Iron Mountains, and Thorn Valley. The magic system feels both intricate and alluring, grounding the plot with rich details and providing a backdrop to the unfolding tension. As the story progresses, I became increasingly absorbed in the political intrigues that drive the narrative. The stakes are high and the alliances are always shifting, keeping me on my toes as I navigated through Yining’s journey for freedom and belonging.

What struck me most was the subtle romance peppered throughout the plot. While it does feature a love triangle, the lack of a clear winner creates a suspenseful atmosphere. Both male leads, Jin-Yong and Prince Zixin, are refreshingly morally grey. Their complexities make them fascinating; I often found myself questioning their motivations and rooting for Yining’s independence above all. It was a brilliant choice by Tan to allow character development to unfold organically, transporting readers away from a conventional focus on romance.

Yining herself—fierce and resourceful—became one of my favorite aspects of the story. Her determination to fight for her place in the world and the family she lost resonated with me on so many levels. She isn’t just a damsel in distress; she’s a warrior navigating a treacherous landscape filled with betrayal. Her portrayal reminded me of characters like Yona from Yona of the Dawn, someone who evolves through the challenges she faces.

While the book is tagged as a Cinderella re-telling, I found this element a bit underwhelming, likely due to my unfamiliarity with the nuanced layers of various cultural retellings. The presence of an evil step-aunt and a lost object provide some parallels, but they felt less pronounced within the richly developed plot overall. However, this didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the story; instead, it highlighted the uniqueness of Tan’s approach.

The writing flows beautifully, and the pacing—though medium—allows for the adequate development of characters and plot. I appreciated this choice as it lent depth to the unfolding narrative, providing me with a full picture of the stakes at play. As twists unraveled towards the climax, I was left eager for more, astonished by unexpected revelations that had me questioning everything.

In conclusion, Never Ever After is a gem of a read for those who appreciate thick political intrigue and rich fantasy elements over a traditional romance-driven plot. If you’re someone who enjoys character-driven narratives steeped in complexity and tension, this book is for you. With a gripping conclusion and a promise of more to come, I’m counting down the days until I can dive into the next installment!

A heartfelt thank you to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for providing me with an advance review copy. This book has made an indelible mark on my reading journey, and I can’t wait to see where Yining’s adventure leads next.
