Book Review: Huntsman (Hunted Kingdom, #1) by Naima Simone
I’ve been a devoted fan of Naima Simone for over a decade, eagerly awaiting each new release, and let me tell you: Huntsman might just be the crown jewel of her work! From the moment I picked up this novel, I was swept into a world that is as action-packed as it is deeply addictive. This year has seen a delightful surge of Black women mafia queens, and let’s just say, I am absolutely here for it! Eshe’s story isn’t just another fairy tale; it’s a vibrant reimagining of Snow White that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The premise is enthralling: Eshe, a young woman who has endured unspeakable trauma, returns to a home shadowed by her mother’s brutal murder. Accusations swirl around her power-hungry aunt, and as dark secrets unfurl, Eshe finds herself grappling with a contract out on her head. The plot twist? Enter Malachi, the tantalizingly dangerous Huntsman tasked with collecting her. And trust me, the chemistry between these two is electric!
What struck me most about Huntsman is the sheer depth of Eshe and Malachi. They are a match made in chaos—turbulent, romantic, and inescapably compelling. Their dynamic feels so authentic; watching them oscillate between fighting and fiery passion is not just hilarious but also a testament to their characters’ complexities. It’s reminiscent of those nail-biting John Wick action sequences, but with a spicy twist of romance that had me laughing out loud and fervently rooting for them.
Trei Taylor and Myles Montgomery’s narration brought the characters to life in an unforgettable way. Their portrayal made Eshe’s fierce spirit and Malachi’s brooding intensity leap off the pages. The writing is immersive and witty, keeping the pacing brisk while skillfully exploring themes of power, revenge, and the scars of a troubled past. Oh, and let’s not forget the spice! Naima doesn’t hold back, and I felt my cheeks heat up more than once. 🥵
However, if I had to offer a critique, it would be that the romance, while sizzling, could have been fleshed out a bit more. Eshe’s admiration for Malachi was tangible, and it felt real, considering her history of observing him before they even met. Yet, I wished for a peek into Malachi’s head to understand what had him so captivated by our fierce heroine. But honestly? I think the notion that he’s even a little crazy keeps the narrative beautifully chaotic, which ultimately works for me!
In conclusion, Huntsman isn’t just for fans of dark romances or twisting fairy tales; it’s for anyone looking to be enthralled by a story packed with rich characters, sharp dialogue, and a dash of audacity. If you love your heroines fierce and your love stories unhinged, this is a must-read. It had me entranced, and I can’t wait for others to indulge in this spicy, thrill-seeking adventure when it releases on October 21, 2025!
