A Review of "Dark Skies" by Danielle L. Jensen: Finding Magic in the Mix

I just finished Dark Skies by Danielle L. Jensen, and oh my gosh—what a ride! You know, whenever I dive into a new fantasy novel, I can’t help but draw an analogy to something delicious. So, let’s start with a quick question: What do milkshakes, Slurpees, and smoothies have in common? Besides being irresistible drinks, they’re all mixes just like this book!

As a self-proclaimed milkshake connoisseur and Slurpee addict, finding that perfect blend is an art. In much the same way, Dark Skies is a seamless mix of magic, action, politics, deception, and romance that kept me glued to every page. Jensen has crafted a captivating journey, and I was swept up in the whirlwind of it all—almost as if I were indulging in my ideal Slurpee!

First, let’s touch on what might be perceived as the less-than-perfect aspect of the narrative. Much like how I sometimes get that disappointing thin layer of liquid at the bottom of my Slurpee cup, I felt the beginning of Dark Skies dragged a bit. It was a tad slow to start, especially since it coincides with the time frame of Dark Shores, rehashing some scenes I already knew. The initial moments felt repetitive, which made the transition into Lydia’s perspective a little rocky.

However, once I got past those scenes, I was completely drawn in. Lydia’s journey piqued my interest, and I couldn’t wait to discover what had happened to her after Dark Shores left me hanging. Jensen masterfully unravels Lydia’s story while intertwining it with those of new characters, especially Killian, who quickly captured my heart. His divine markings and complex personality made him an intriguing counterpart to Lydia’s quest to save Teriana, adding depth to their relationship.

The stakes are raised in Dark Skies. Not only do we have the threat of the Cel legions, but looming are the armies devoted to the seventh god, the Corruptor. The tension of forbidden love and impending doom creates a rich tapestry that resonates deeply, inviting the reader to hang on until the last page. Just when I thought I had a handle on the world’s complexities, Jensen introduced medieval zombies—yes, you read that right! Her creativity knows no bounds, and it’s that unpredictability that keeps the reader engaged.

Aside from the exciting plot, Jensen’s writing style is an absolute delight—lyrical yet clear, allowing us to feel the weight of each moment as Lydia grapples with her choices. One memorable quote captures this struggle perfectly: “You learn to navigate darkness not by shedding the light but by embracing the shadows.” This resonated with me, both in the context of the story and in our everyday lives.

In conclusion, Dark Skies is more than just a sequel; it’s a richly woven tapestry that enriches the world Jensen has created. If you loved Dark Shores and enjoy tales filled with intricate politics, thrilling magic, and compelling romance, then this book is for you. Ultimately, I appreciated how this story expanded my understanding of the characters and left me hungry for the next installment.

I can’t wait to dive into the third book, where we’ll finally see all four POVs—what a tantalizing prospect! For anyone seeking escapism wrapped in an engaging narrative, Dark Skies is a must-read that I wholeheartedly recommend. You can catch more reflections and reviews on my blog at tlbranson.com/blog.
