Review of Cover Story by Celia Laskey

✨ You know that feeling when you stumble upon a book that feels like it was written just for you? That was my experience with Cover Story! I finished it not too long ago and can barely contain my excitement to share this gem with all of you. 💕 Celia Laskey has crafted an enchanting F/F lesbian romance that blends humor, heartfelt moments, and genuine character growth. Trust me, you won’t want to miss it.

At the heart of the story are Ali, an anxious, grieving widow, and Cara, a vibrant young actress not only making waves in Hollywood but also in Ali’s heart. As Ali navigates her role as Cara’s publicist, tasked with managing her image while keeping her sexuality under wraps, tension and sparks fly. It’s a delightful premise that dives deeper than just romantic entanglements. The themes of grief and anxiety punctuate the narrative, making it relatable and true to life. I found myself rooting for Ali as she grapples with her imperfections, and the character growth is so nuanced that I felt a wave of hope wash over me by the end.

The writing itself is a joyful ride. Celia’s prose is impactful yet playful—perfectly capturing the chemistry between Ali and Cara. There are moments where I caught myself chuckling out loud, reflecting just how alive these characters felt on the page. Unlike so many romances where communication feels like an uphill battle, Ali and Cara have a refreshing openness, which made my reading experience all the more enjoyable. I loved not having to yell at the characters to “just talk it out!”

One of the aspects that resonated with me was how the relationship didn’t feel overly sexualized or fantasized. As a lesbian, I appreciated seeing a depiction of love and connection that felt real and genuine, almost like I was reading a story about friends I know. Ali and Cara embodied an authentic romance that balanced the fun of being silly together with the deeper emotional layers of personal struggles.

As for the pacing, I would describe it as medium-paced, but I couldn’t help but feel like I was racing through the pages because, honestly, I just couldn’t get enough! There’s a beautiful interplay of lighthearted and emotional moments that kept me engaged throughout.

I also want to highlight the author’s note at the end. It felt like a warm hug, adding an extra layer of connection that enriched my experience with the book. And can we talk about Glen? What a perfect addition to this story!
