Book Review: Chain of Thorns (The Last Hours, #3) by Cassandra Clare

As someone who has been captivated by Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter world since the tender age of twelve, the anticipation for Chain of Thorns was palpable. The previous installments, Chain of Gold and Chain of Iron, both nearly became cherished favorites in my reading history. So when I finally opened the pages of this much-awaited finale, I couldn’t shake the feeling of excitement mixed with trepidation. Somehow, I was both ready to return to London’s shadowy corners and apprehensive about what might await me.

The series wraps up with a complex tapestry of emotions, themes, and, unfortunately, a few disappointments. Clare dives deep into the struggles of the beloved characters, particularly Cordelia, who grapples with loss and the burden of newfound responsibilities as Lilith’s paladin. However, the pacing seemed drawn out; much of the story felt like it waded through unnecessary miscommunication and misunderstandings, overshadowing the thrilling drama that made the first two books so captivating.

Take, for example, Cordelia’s character transformation. The proud, fierce girl we grew attached to seems to have tangled herself in so much inner conflict that it became frustrating. Her distance from Lucie felt uncharacteristic, and it left me aching for the moments when their bond was unbreakable. Yes, Cordelia was influenced by trauma, yet the manner in which her pride drove the plot felt like an excuse to elongate pages rather than an authentic character development.

As for James, witnessing his unraveling due to past trauma was poignant and, at times, heartbreaking. Yet even amidst this raw emotional landscape, I found myself wishing the focus had shifted more to the healing journeys of other characters, notably Matthew, whose struggles with alcoholism deserve more depth than merely touching the surface. His battles could have been interwoven more seamlessly into the narrative, enhancing both his arc and the story’s gravity.

Of course, this review wouldn’t be complete without celebrating the highlights. Alastair emerged as a beacon of character growth and complexity, adding richness to the overarching tale. His journey towards self-acceptance was refreshing, providing a counterbalance to the heavier themes present throughout the book. The delightful rapport between Thomas and Alastair brought genuine warmth to an otherwise tumultuous narrative, making their bond a source of joy amid darker elements.

Yet, amidst my longing for exquisite moments reminiscent of Chain of Gold, I felt let down by particular plot twists and characterization choices. For instance, the death of Christopher felt rushed and unfulfilling, reducing what should have been an emotional peak to a mere footnote. The lack of genuine grief from the characters was disappointing, especially considering the emotional weight of his journey.

In the end, Chain of Thorns presents a mixture of beautifully written passages and frustrating narrative choices. Themes of love, forgiveness, and the condemnation of self came through, but not without an air of dissatisfaction that left me yearning for the vibrancy I had come to love in Clare’s writing. For newer readers to the Shadowhunter world, this book may feel rich with dramatic turns, but for loyal fans, it might not quite capture the essence that made the earlier installments shine so brightly.

Ultimately, I would recommend this book to those who enjoy character-driven stories steeped in emotional complexity and intricate relationships, but be prepared for some disillusionment if you’re hoping for a flawless conclusion to a beloved saga. Sometimes, the allure of nostalgia is powerful, yet it also magnifies disappointment. Readers will close this book with a bittersweet aftertaste—a culmination of feelings I wish had been crafted more delicately.
