Review of I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I’m Trapped in a Rom-C… by Kimberly Lemming

Oh, where do I even begin? Picking up I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I’m Trapped in a Rom-C… felt like reuniting with an old friend—it came with the promise of quirky escapades and a delightful dose of humor, courtesy of Kimberly Lemming. An author I’ve loved deeply through her Mead Mishaps series, this book had me intrigued from the start. But as I ventured deeper into the narrative, I found myself grappling with mixed feelings. Sigh.

Let’s dive in! The story revolves around Dorothy (or Dory), a wildlife biology PhD student who’s doing the noble work of documenting wildlife when she unexpectedly encounters a lion—and then is whisked away by aliens. Yep, you read that right! It’s this outlandish premise that initially hooked me, alongside the undeniable charm of her lion buddy, Toto. (Seriously, how can you resist a lion named after The Wizard of Oz?)

The book truly shines in its playful banter and ludicrous situations, classic trademarks of Lemming’s writing. However, this particular read felt like a mixed bag of my favorite ingredients. There were moments—like the sizzling chemistry between Dory and the otherworldly males Sol and Lok—that hit just the right notes, but the pacing was clunky and slow, especially in the first half. Honestly, I found myself glancing at the percentage of my e-reader more often than I’m proud to admit. And let’s just say, I wasn’t as captivated as I had hoped to be.

As I dug into the plot, I appreciated the humor and considerable steam that Lemming is known for. Dory’s interactions with her alien counterparts brought some delightful surprises, including moments of dirty talk and more than a hint of spicy action. I mean, who knew aliens could be so… creative? Yet, I craved a stronger buildup. It felt like waiting for your favorite salad only to be served a mix of everything you didn’t ask for.

The themes of compatibility and exploration of love were compelling; Dory’s surprising role as a potential mother to alien species posed some interesting questions. Still, I found myself yearning for a clearer foundation to make sense of the wild narrative. Why were the dinosaurs really there? What happened to the other human females? Those unanswered questions had me scratching my head, longing for a clearer direction that this story sometimes lacked.

But it wasn’t all confusion! The nostalgic flashbacks to childhood through references like Tamagotchis and Dory’s lovable Toto brought joy amid the chaos. I mean, who doesn’t want a lion friend that eventually finds his “queen”?

In the end, I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I’m Trapped in a Rom-C… wasn’t quite what I expected. Though I still giggled and enjoyed the warmth of Lemming’s signature humor, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing—likely that scrumptious salad I usually devour.

I’d recommend this book to readers who adore a good mix of comedy, unconventional romances, and, of course, a touch of the bizarre. It may also resonate with those who appreciate unapologetic smut—just be prepared for a narrative that may leave you feeling a bit lost. For now, I may need to reassess this read, but here’s hoping for a stronger showing in Lemming’s next offering!
