Title: Crowntide (Lightlark, #4) – A Complex Journey of Decisions and Repetitions

When I cracked open Crowntide, the fourth book in the Lightlark series by Aster W. Leung, I was filled with a mix of anticipation and trepidation. It’s no secret that I’ve had a love-hate relationship with this series; parts of me remain captivated by Isla’s world while other parts nearly succumb to frustration. So, what would this latest installment bring to the table? Spoilers ahead, my fellow readers!

Right off the bat, the themes of Crowntide hit me; choice and consequence lie at its heart. Isla Crown, who occasionally feels like the most Mary Sue protagonist I’ve ever encountered, finally shocks us by making a decision—shocking, I know! After her adventures through various portals and deserts, facing off against new villains and old favorites, Isla finds herself at a pivotal crossroad. But did it feel earned? To be honest, I found her journey, while somewhat engaging, still lacked the depth I craved.

The pacing felt uneven; while certain action-packed moments had me page-flipping furiously, others dragged like a slow-motion montage of uninspired character banter. The author’s writing style, vibrant and whimsical, occasionally fell victim to its repetitive nature. Isla and Grim’s exchanges often felt recycled, as if I’d read similar variations in previous installments. Aster’s insistence on repeating certain phrases and plot points—Grim’s constant insistence that he would burn the world for Isla and the relentless back-and-forth between him and Oro—made me wonder if we might be trapped in an endless loop of romantic confusion.

Of course, let’s not forget Oro, who continues to be the shining beacon of the series. While Isla’s love life felt tedious, Oro’s presence reminded me why I stuck around through the previous books. His loyalty, charm, and charisma outshone many other characters. I adored how the dynamics between Oro, Grim, and Isla evolved, even if it left Oro sidelined for much of the narrative.

The introduction of Shadow Daddy 2.0 as the new antagonist was intriguing, bringing a bit of spark to the otherwise familiar plotline. However, Isla’s interactions with him felt more like padding than progression. And let’s not ignore the eye-roll moment when Isla picks Grim as her ultimate love interest! If you saw that twist coming, you’re definitely not alone. The narrative’s tendency to revisit the “enemies-to-lovers” trope became tiresome, and I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment at Isla’s choice—it was predictable, and the ambiguity surrounding her love interests had been one of the more intriguing threads in the series.

However, Aster does deserve credit for some moments of brilliance. The banter between Grim and Oro was genuinely entertaining, often feeling like a well-placed comic relief. The imagery in Crowntide also stood out for me; I appreciated how Aster attempted more descriptive language, making the landscapes feel vivid and alive. Whether I was rolling my eyes at repetitive plot devices or chuckling at Oro’s antics, I couldn’t deny that I was invested in the journey.

So, who would enjoy Crowntide? If you’ve been with Isla from the beginning and revel in her epic romantic saga filled with striking heroes, this book is likely to light your fire. However, if you prefer a tightly woven plot with well-developed arcs and avoid repetition like the plague, perhaps consider steering clear of this one.

In the end, Crowntide may not have fully met my expectations, but the journey with Isla, Oro, and the tangled web of magical chaos still left me with moments to cherish. I may have grumbled through parts of it, but Aster W. Leung has created a world I can’t seem to detach from, and I’m eagerly awaiting what the finale holds for all these intriguing, albeit flawed, characters. Here’s to hoping the next installment brings the depth we’ve all been yearning for!
