Review of The Demon and the Light (The Floating World, #2)

Hello, fellow book lovers! Today, I’m bursting to share my thoughts on the thrilling sequel, The Demon and the Light by the incredibly talented Axie Oh. After absolutely adoring the first book in The Floating World series, I had high expectations—and let me tell you, not only did this book meet them, it completely blew them out of the water! A massive thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group for this ARC!

From the very first page, it was clear that reading The Demon and the Light would be an unforgettable ride. Honestly, the sheer enjoyment I experienced while diving into this book was unparalleled. It was a wild rollercoaster of plot twists, heartfelt moments, and nail-biting action that had me holding my breath more times than I could count! Axie Oh knows how to keep her readers on their toes, and this sequel was no exception.

Let’s talk about the writing—Oh, how it dazzles! Axie’s style flows effortlessly, and her knack for crafting action scenes is nothing short of cinematic genius. They leap off the page, making it impossible not to visualize every thrilling moment. As a bit of a dialogue snob, I’m often critical, but Axie’s characters’ conversations are so natural, so filled with life and personality, that they leave me wishing I could write just like her.

Sunho and Ren, the beloved couple from the first book, have only grown more compelling. Their dynamic is a beautiful tapestry of growth and love, both as individuals and as partners. Watching them navigate the complexities of their world while staying true to themselves was inspiring. And then there’s Jai, who has officially stolen my heart! His witty comebacks and his relatable chaos make his POV chapters a joy to read. He had such an impressive character arc, showing growth that was as fulfilling as it was entertaining.

Speaking of characters, I adored seeing some familiar faces again—Tag and Yurhee are absolute gems! The found-family trope is a prominent feature in this universe, and the camaraderie and banter between all the characters lit up the pages. There’s something special about a book where the side characters shine as brightly as the leads, and Axie manages to create a world where every character feels essential to the story.

Plot-wise, things get seriously intense! After the incredibly thrilling beginning, the pacing steadies itself, wrapping us in layers of mystery and revelations at every turn. Just when I thought I could catch my breath, a plot twist threw me right into the next whirlwind of emotion. However, I have to note that the final face-off felt a tad rushed—while I enjoyed the action-packed scenes leading up to it, a bit more struggle could have amplified the climax. But honestly, the beautifully rich plot and character development more than made up for it.

Overall, I can confidently say that The Demon and the Light is everything I crave in a fantasy. The intricate world-building, rich characters, and gripping plot delivered a reading experience that will stick with me for a long time. If you haven’t picked up the first book, The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea, do yourself a favor and start there! This duology is a must-read for anyone who loves captivating fantasy worlds, swoon-worthy romance, and characters who will worm their way into your heart.

Mark your calendars—The Demon and the Light releases on October 21st! Trust me, you don’t want to miss this incredible journey. Happy reading!
