Review of Overruled by Lana Ferguson

When I first stumbled across Overruled, the title and premise instantly piqued my interest. A forbidden romance between two divorce lawyers? Count me in! There’s something inherently spicy about the legal world—especially when it’s set against a backdrop of opposing teams in the courtroom. Add in a sprinkle of enemies-to-lovers excitement, and I was hooked. So, I grabbed my ARC, excited to dive in, hoping for the delightful chaos that such a premise promised.

At its core, Overruled revolves around Dani and Ezra, two talented divorce lawyers caught in a web of professional rivalry and undeniable attraction. Dani, with her unwavering ambition to become a partner at her firm, stands as a testament to fierce independence. She’s devoted to helping her clients navigate their worst moments, a true warrior for the bewildered—until she finds herself on the opposing side of a case against Ezra, the charming and notoriously dubbed “heartbreak prince” of the courtroom.

Now, let’s talk about Ezra. Initially, he comes across as a bit too cocky for my taste, yearning for Dani in a way that felt a tad cliché. Don’t get me wrong; I love a good yearning hero, but I like a bit of a challenge! However, as the story unfolds, Ezra reveals layers of sweetness that balanced out his bravado, creating an engaging dynamic between the two. Dani’s icy demeanor stands in sharp contrast to his warmth, making their chemistry palpable whenever they engage.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the book is the courtroom drama. The tension is electric, especially as they navigate the challenges of their respective cases. This blend of professional rivalry and personal stakes truly kept me turning the pages. However, I did find the attraction that blossomed between them a tad too fast—there’s a whole lot of instant love and lust, which, while enjoyable in moderation, could feel a bit overwhelming at times. That first chapter hits you with smut right off the bat, setting the tone for what is undeniably a spicy read throughout.

The plot itself, while predictable at times, had some surprising twists related to the central case that kept me engaged. Honestly, I could’ve done without some of the more questionable scenes—in particular, a rather scandalous escapade in Dani’s parents’ bathroom, which definitely made me cringe (seriously, who thought of that?). It kind of shifted my focus from what should have been a steamy moment to the glaring reality of unsanitary concerns!

Overall, I believe Overruled will find a solid audience amongst readers craving steamy, contemporary romance with intriguing character dynamics. While it might not have fully resonated with me—partly due to my personal preferences—I can see many diving headlong into this quick, enjoyable read. If you love a good enemies-to-lovers tale with that enjoyable courtroom backdrop, this one might just be your next guilty pleasure.
